Kids in the Know Part 4

Mrs. Lauder returned for our final session in the Kids in a The Know program.

We reviewed Hootie and Baxters Safety rules: " if someone asks you to go and your parents don't know say no" and " use the buddy system"

We brainstormed feelings that people can feel instead of just happy and sad! We came up with a huge list!

Emotions= feelings.

Everyone has the right to their own feelings and there are no wrong feelings. Sometimes when we are angry we take our feelings out on someone else. We all have the right to be angry or upset and our bodies gives us signals to tell us. ( headache, upset stomach, sweaty, shaky, etc)

" some feelings give us important information about ourselves. When we pay attention to how we feeling it helps us to solve our problems "

We then read 'Don't let the pigeon drive the bus"

Check out the story on You Tube : http://youtu.be/rWEekO4ufwM

We watched the pigeons body language and tone of voice throughout the story.

Mrs. McMillan's trip to Gimli

I am very lucky to have the opportunity to go to a technology conference in Gimli for the next 2 days. It is called "Riding the Wave" and is focused on storytelling, sharing information, and story making. There is a group of other teachers and coordinators from SJSD here as well.
The weather is sunny, but cold but I am not going to complain about the view!

I spent Thursday listening to other teachers from across Manitoba share how they use technology in their classroom to inspire their students, communicate with parents, and connect with others around the world. It is always inspiring to see what other teachers are doing in their classrooms and bring back ideas!!

Friday morning I had a refresher on using iMovie on the iPads. We are going to be working in iMovie for an end of year learning project that I am very excited about. This was a great motivator for me to get started on this project and begin to show how to us iMovie in the classroom!! Stay tuned to the blog for some exciting learning!

After a quick break enjoying the view,

I went to my last session which went through a bunch of apps that can be used as a teacher to help keep my assessment and observation organized. It was led by Joan Badger, one of our technology coordinators. It is a hard transition from paper and pencil, or my favourite sticky notes, to using my teacher iPads to document learning. Next years goal!!

Overall, it was a great 2 days to share and learn with other teachers across Manitoba. It was a great opportunity to be able to participate and attend this conference!! I have missed my mom eyes these last 2 days, but know they are in good hands!!

Have a fantastic May long weekend and enjoy the sunshine!!

Kids in the Know Part 3

Mrs. Lauder came back today for part 3 of Kids in the Know program.

We reviewed the first 2 rules:
If you are asked to go and your parents don't know shout no !
The buddy system

We worked with partners to discuss a variety of scenarios and using the 2 safety rules what would we do.

Examples:
A man asks to take a picture of us with a new camera. What do they do?
Sammy is at his cousins house. Has uncle invites them in to have I ice cream. Sammy's cousin doesn't want any. Does Sammy go in?
Rory is playing in his yard. A man asks Rory to help carry a box to his car. What does Rory do?
PAtrick is at a football game with a friend and his dad. He needs to go to the bathroom. What does he do?
Bella is trick or treating with her friend. Her friend is tired and wants to go home. What should. Bella doing?

Kids in the Know Part Two

Today Mrs. Lauder came back for our second session of Kids in the Know. We reviewed the first safety rule:

"if you are asked to go and your parents don't know, shout no!"

We talked about that if someone- even someone that we know askes us to go somewhere but we don't have permission or our parents don't know say no, and go to a trusted adult ( home, school, a store, a trusted neighbour etc) and tell them what happened.

The second rule was shared with us from Baxter the bunny.

 " Bring a buddy along"

Mrs. Lauder will be back next day 5 to teach us the next safety rule!!
